Sea cadet Justin Koelewyn, of Nanaimo’s Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Amphion, was recently awarded the Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans medal of merit.
The 16-year-old was judged to be the top cadet out of 15 candidates attending the eight-week Marine Engineer Course at HMCS Quadra Cadet Summer Training Centre in Comox.
Koelewyn was selected based on his overall achievement on the course, leadership qualities, instructional abilities, dress and deportment, motivation and co-operation with others.
He spent eight weeks learning the engineering systems and duties on the navy’s patrol class training Orca vessels.
