Bullhead derby will appeal to young anglers

Pamplona, Spain, has the running of the bulls. Nanaimo, B.C., has the fishing of the bullheads.

Bruno’s Bullhead Derby, presented by the Kiwanis of Nanaimo Sunrisers club, takes place this Sunday (Aug. 13) at the Brechin Boat Ramp.

Prizes will be awarded for the longest bullhead, shortest bullhead and ugliest bullhead, and there will also be draw prizes.

Children ages 2-12 are invited to participate. They can bring their own rod (with barbless hooks only), or the club will have a supply of fishing poles. Life jackets are mandatory; there will be extras at the dock supplied by the Nanaimo Yacht Club and City of Nanaimo parks and rec.

Registration for the fishing derby is from 9:30-11:30 a.m. with the derby taking place from 10 a.m.-noon.
