Addiction foundation supports community

NANAIMO – Addiction foundation provides $125,000 to support 20-bed facility.

The Nanaimo Addiction Foundation provides funding for development, implementation and co-ordination of alcohol and drug education/prevention, harm reduction and treatment services offered by non-profit charitable organizations within the Nanaimo region.

In late 2012, the foundation seized a unique opportunity to support and maintain a 20-bed addiction facility previously managed by the Nanaimo and District Surfside Society which was in jeopardy of closing.

The foundation responded to a proposal from the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society requesting funds to support the newly founded partnership with Vancouver Island Therapeutic Community.

VITC in partnership with Surfside and John Howard have undertaken to provide continuing support in our community, for an affordable treatment facility, for men with drug and alcohol addictions.

The foundation supported the request for funds by the partnership and provided $125,000.  These funds are directed equally at improving the premises and to hire additional professional staff, to meet licensing requirements.  This in turn will qualify VITC to seek additional funding from other agencies to support its program.

This strategic investment is expected to pay dividends for years to come and make a difference in the lives of a large number of men and families.
