Airport website adds new features for flight status

Taking off for a summer holiday is getting even easier at Nanaimo Airport.

Taking off for a summer holiday is getting even easier at Nanaimo Airport.

The new website (www.nanaimoairport.com) launched Friday and enables passengers to check the real-time flight status of all arrivals and departures.

The website also features current conditions and forecasts from Environment Canada.

The site includes links to the central Vancouver Island tourism websites, so arriving passengers can quickly access maps, event calendars and other travel planning information.

“Change is in the air and on the ground at Nanaimo Airport,” said Mike Hooper, Nanaimo Airport Commission president, in a press release. “We started with a terminal and runway expansion, then added a route and carrier, and now we’re expanding our services for travelers. The website’s new resources give passengers instant on-the-go access to real-time information, whether they’re on a laptop or a smart phone.”

About 35,500 passengers will use Nanaimo Airport this July and August, an estimated 5.5-per cent jump from 2010 figures.

With terminal expansion completed this month, the airport can now accommodate 186 passengers per hour, up from 42 passengers per hour before the addition.
