People will be able to purchase their own personal crime fighter while helping children overcome a devastating disease.

Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock riders – Nanaimo RCMP Const. Sandi Holman and News Bulletin photographer Chris Bush – are organizing a fundraiser, featuring live and silent auction, fashion show, and wine and cheese at the Queen’s Saturday (Sept. 10).

“Jerry Hong and his staff have been working really hard at helping put together what is going to be a really fun night for a great cause and, so far, it looks like we’re going to get a pretty big turnout,” Bush said. “Sandi and I really hope this is the start of what will become a premier annual Tour de Rock fundraiser event in Nanaimo.”

Among the items up for auction are police and firefighters from Nanaimo.

People can also bid on: a whale watching adventure in Tofino; a golf and hotel package in Campbell River; photo shoot with Dirk Heydemann; 20-minute helicopter ride from West Coast Helicopters; standby tickets for Tofino Air; a lawyer’s will package; a Les Paul guitar from Long and McQuade and more.

Entertainment is provided by the Lance Lapointe Band, plus a fashion show from Guava Apparell.

Tour de Rock is a two-week bike ride from Port Hardy to Victoria, which stops in communities along the way to help raise money for programs and research into childhood cancer.

Holman and Bush are two of 22 riders from RCMP and municipal police detachments across the Island. Bush, along with Brittany King and Louise Hartland, are from print, radio and television media outlets.

The Tour leaves Port Alice Sept. 24, arriving in Esquimalt Oct. 7. The group will be in Nanaimo Oct. 2.

The benefit at the Queen’s begins at 7 p.m. Tickets $25 at Guava Apparell, Nanaimo RCMP detachment, the News Bulletin, Headliners and the Queen’s. For more information, please call 250-754-6751.
