As far as local golf tournaments go, it’s one of the majors, and it’s about to tee off.

The Women’s Mid-Island Amateur Golf Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday (June 3-4) at the Nanaimo Golf Club.

“We’ve got 70 women from all over – the mainland as well as the Island, and a lot of returning players, and there are a smattering of new people,” said Penny Mitchell, event organizer.

The tournament will be split this year into two divisions. Aside from the stroke-play competition, there will be an ‘eclectic’ division where players will count only their best score of the weekend on each hole.

“There’s something for everyone,” Mitchell said. “We’re just trying to do what we can do to keep golf alive and make this a fun event that people will want to continue to come to.”

She said the course is ready to go.

“This past winter has created some challenges for our course maintenance crews and they’ve been working like crazy to get the greens into beautiful shape and everything seems to be coming along really well,” said Mitchell.

The field of competitors includes past champions Christina Proteau and Shirin Anjarwalla.

The first round is Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and the final round is Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
