It was an up-and-down day at the ballpark for the VIU Mariners’ offence.

Vancouver Island University’s baseball club split a doubleheader Sunday against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, winning 11-5 in the first game before falling 11-1 in the rematch.

The first game was closer than the score suggests, as the Cascades hit a game-tying grand slam in the sixth before the Mariners immediately responded, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to seize back control of the ball game.

In the victory, Phil Whelan had two doubles and three RBIs and Tanner Hess also drove in three runs. Liam Ballance hit a single and a triple and Bryan O’Hara also had two hits. Austin Gurr was the winning pitcher, throwing seven innings and giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out 10.

GAME ON … VIU visits the Thompson River University Wolfpack in Kamloops this coming weekend (April 15-16).
