The Vancouver Island University Mariners’ national championship banner raising was a long time coming, but the team finally got a chance to look back on a remarkable achievement.

The M’s volleyball teams opened the 2021-22 Pacific Western Athletic Association season on Friday, Nov. 5, at the VIU gym.

The women’s program raised the banner from their 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship, played the second week of March in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to take hold.

They celebrated that accomplishment, then marked their return to meaningful volleyball with a four-set win against the Camosun Chargers, 25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20. The next night’s rematch didn’t go as well with the M’s falling 14-25, 28-26, 15-25, 25-16, 15-9.

VIU’s men also split the weekend, losing 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-10 and then winning 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-14.

GAME ON … The Mariners visit the Douglas Royals on Nov. 12-13. Next home action is against the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Nov. 21.
