It’s another year when all VIU athletes are champions.

Vancouver Island University’s athletic department held its annual awards banquet Tuesday night at the Coast Bastion Hotel, and there was a lot to celebrate. Another PacWest aggregate championship means that every VIU team had a part in making 2016-17 a banner year.

The premier awards for VIU Athlete of the Year went to a pair of volleyball players, Megan Rosenlund and Braydon Brouwer.

Freshmen of the Year winners were soccer players Shun Takano and Chloe Gummer.

Coaches’ Awards went to basketball players Nick Xylinas and Celina Guadagni, volleyball players Brouwer and Mikayla Wagner, soccer players Carli Rey and Luke Holmes, golfer Jacob Bland and badminton player Helen Cheung.

The Golden Boot awards for top soccer scorers went to Gummer and Billy Bagiopoulos.

The Mariners also celebrated previously announced PacWest and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association honours, giving the whole athletic department another chance to cheer CCAA Players of the Year Rosenlund and basketball star Usama Zaid, and CCAA All-Canadians Rosenlund, Zaid, Brouwer and Takano, and a long list of athletes of the week, coaches of the year and all-stars.

VIU’s men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and women’s soccer team won provincial championships in 2016-17 and the women’s v-ball team went on to win bronze at nationals. VIU’s badminton program combined for a silver and two bronze-medal results at nationals.
