Nanaimo’s curling season concludes

We take a final look back to the past season of local curling this week, catching up on year-end awards from senior and mixed leagues…

From the CIBC Wood Gundy senior ladies’ division, Pat Johnson sends word that the winning team from the first square of competition was that of skip Doris Fergusson, third Sharon Brown, second Madeline Riley and lead Alice Bourcier. In second place was the team of Adrienne Smith, Carolee Brown, Laurie Rear and Kathleen Hewitt.

In the second square, winners were Agnes Geiger, Linda Olsen, Jean Kenna and Corrine Jensen. Runners-up were Anthea Simick, Carolee Brown, Penny Metheny and Madeline Riley.

At the senior men’s 55-plus year-end banquet, square No. 1 winners of the Howie Christopherson Trophy were Brian Scorer, Vic Brice, Jake McGlennen and Chris Price. The Royal Lepage Nanaimo Realty Trophy went to George Duffell, Bob Davies, Bob Larsen, Roger Lytton and Pat Meehan. Square No. 2 winners were skip Nels Symbaluk and his team of Bob Larsen, Doug Defeu and Barry Webb who claimed the Christensen Collision Trophy. The Joe Boudot Memorial Trophy went to Brian Scorer, Fred Mater, Bruce Farquarson and Kevin Hood.

Recognized from the third square were Fred Withey, Kyle Clifford, Josh Purney and Meehan as winners of the Nanaimo Chrysler Trophy, while the team of Gord Smeeton, David Pettigrew, Kevin Hood and Tom Bates earned the Marks Import Auto Trophy. Top senior men’s team from the final square of the season, receiving the Chic Johnston Memorial Trophy, was that of Brian Scorer, Vic Whitney, Bill Millward and Doug McAmmond.

In the Mid-Island Co-Op seniors’ rink of choice league this season, league champions were the team of Frank Smith, Cam Foster, Tom Meek, Doug Scheibel and Zorka Smith. Runner-up was the Phil Chase foursome.

Turning to mixed curling results, Tom and Janice Stromar were coordinators for the Investors Group Friday Mixed League. Winners of the A square competition were skip Dean Mousseau and his team of Tracey Mousseau, Tom Weinreich, Shauna Weinreich and Margie Blackley. Tops in B square for the year were Nina Mangano, Brendon Plamondon, Sarah Plamondon and Nick Mangano. In the year-end bonspiel, A event winners were Mike Kenefick and his teammates Elaine Cloutier, Dennis Plamondon and Michelle Plamondon. The Mangano team won the bonspiel’s B event title.

From the Senior Open Mixed League, coordinator Brian Askin reports that the first square of the season was won by Joe Briand, Sallie Atkinson, Don Mounce and Steen Petersen. In second place came the foursome of Terry Miller, Joyce Wagstaff, Steve Barnes and Ardell Ramage. The second square of the year resulted in a first-place title for Agnes Geiger, Andy Butler, Mounce and lead Helene Carter Sauire. Runners-up were Don Varney, Shirley Learmonth, Carl Beuchler and Marla Barnes.

Looking ahead, plans for next season begin this month. The Nanaimo Curling Centre’s annual general meeting and election of officers will be June 14 at 7 p.m. at the club.
