Nanaimo masters win track titles

Six Nanaimo athletes won provincial crowns at the B.C. Masters Track and Field Championships

Six Nanaimo athletes won provincial crowns at the B.C. Masters Track and Field Championships. A contingent from the Nanaimo Track and Field Club competed in Langley from June 16-18 and totalled 16 gold medals, six silvers and five bronzes.

Wanda Urbanowicz, coach of the Nanaimo masters, said in a club press release that she was delighted with the results and said the athletes have shown dedication and enthusiasm not just to compete, but also with their day-to-day training.

“Whether it is getting a personal best, simply hitting the same marks as last year or being able to finish a challenging race, the masters can be just as giddy with pride as the kids,” Urbanowicz said.

Joe Giegerich won both the 100-metre dash and the pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump.Terry Riggins took gold in the 1,500m and 800m and was second in the 400m. Sven Donaldson won high jump, pole vault and triple jump and took silver in long jump. Tim Hendrie got bronze in the 400m, high jump and shot put. Phillip Vannini won shot put and discus.

Nola Hendrie won gold in shot put, discus and pole vault, took silver in high jump and bronze in long jump. Denise Bonin won the 400-metre final in her division and also earned silver in the 200m and long jump and bronze in the 100m dash. Patti Rogers was second in the 200m.
