A Nanaimo track and field athlete hurled a hammer far enough for a meet record and a national championship.

Ethan Katzberg won the midget boys’ hammer throw at the Legion Youth Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Brandon, Man.

The 15-year-old sent the hammer 61.54 metres in his fifth attempt, surpassing the previous legion youth midget record of 59.44 metres. Katzberg’s throw was more than eight metres farther than the runner-up’s.

Katzberg fouled on his first two attempts, but on his third throw, he sent the four-kilogram hammer 60.22m, a new personal best.

Ethan’s older sister Jessica also competed in hammer throw at legion youth nationals, placing fourth in her age category.
