Motocross race series announced

No nationals this year, but Wastelands track will host three races

The Nanaimo Motocross Association is gearing up for another fast-paced season.

The association recently announced its 2017 schedule, which will include three stops this year on the Vancouver Island series.

Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation nationals will bypass Nanaimo this year as organizers chose instead to add a Prince George stop, but the local club is hopeful the event will return in the future.

In the meantime, the Island series will come to the Wastelands Motocross Park on April 16, May 28 and Sept. 10.

Motocross enthusiasts are excited about the coming season, said Racheal Talboys, the association’s secretary.

“The Nanaimo Motocross Association [is] a family-oriented, non-profit club committed to promoting organized motocross in the region. It provides members a safe environment to ride and enjoy the sport of motocross while spending time with family and friends,” she said in a press release. “It’s also a great place for everyone to come watch motocross racing.”

Some riders are as young as four years old, and range all the way up to masters divisions.

“Members either race competitively or just enjoy riding around the track for fun,” Talboys said.

The association will be hosting clinics and open house events at the Wastelands track, located on Weigles Road at the top of Biggs Road and Doumont Road.
