The Mid Island Pirates gave up a few too many runs to win any ball games on the long weekend.

Nanaimo’s B.C. Premier Baseball League team played a homestand Saturday and Sunday, hosting the Langley Blaze for a doubleheader and then getting in a make-up game against the Victoria Mariners.

The Pirates were blown out by the Blaze 12-0 to start the weekend, then came close in a 9-8 setback in the rematch. The next day, the Pirates were defeated 9-3 by the M’s.

In the first game against Langley, Marcus Steen had Nanaimo’s only hit. Steen also led the offence in the rematch, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two stolen bases. Morley Scott had a pair of RBIs and Ben Munger scored two runs. Gavin Pringle threw five innings, giving up four runs while striking out eight batters.

On Sunday, Jackson Stephen went 3-for-3 and scored two runs and Connor Caskanette hit a single and a double.

GAME ON … The Pirates visit the Blaze on Saturday (May 27) and then take on the Abbotsford Cardinals the next day in the Fraser Valley. Mid Island’s next home game is June 7 when the Victoria Eagles visit Serauxmen Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
