Karate students sweep podium at cup tournament

Nanaimo karate athletes were among the Island’s best.

Shima Karate School had a contingent of nearly 30 students competing at the Victoria Cup April 29-30 at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence.

Sensei Kurt Nordli said that the Shima athletes had a great time at the event and they came back with 32 medals.

Results include:

Senior coloured belt - Neil Surry, third, long weapons>

Junior black belt - Corin Cooper, first, long weapons; Liam Surry, first, short weapons.

18-and-over - Marcello Martella, third, forms, third, sparring.

17-and-under - Adam Welsh, third, long weapons; Damon Baerg, second, long weapons, first, short weapons; Oliver Hilderley, second, short weapons.

17-and-under coloured belt - Cole Gregson, third, short weapons.

17-and-under black belt - Evan Milne, second, forms, first, sparring; Amelia Cooper, first, forms, second, sparring; Corin Cooper, third, forms, third, sparring.

14-17 blue-brown belt - Liam Surry, first, forms; Samantha Wolff, third, forms, third, sparring.

10-13 blue-brown belt - Michael Good, first, sparring; Allie MacIntyre, first, forms.

10-13-year-old orange-green - Cole Gregson, third, sparring; Azia Deal, second, sparring.

10-year-old orange-green - Morgan Scarisbrick, first, forms; Owen Hopewell, third, forms; Damon Baerg, third, forms; Oliver Hilderley, second, forms.

Nine-and-under - Jack Gregson, second, sparring; Eric LeGuyder, third, sparring; Edward LeGuyder, third, forms, first, sparring; Henry Clifton, second, forms.

In other club news, Shima will hold its official grand opening of its new dojo at the old Wellington Library location on Barons Road. There will be demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., door prizes and a barbecue going all day.
