Judo athletes win double gold in Nanaimo

The Nanaimo Judo Club finished their Vancouver Island circuit the right way – with an array of medals.

The club hosted the Vancouver Island Judo Tournament on Saturday at Georgia Avenue Community School and home-gym advantage paid off with 23 top-three finishes.

Estelle Morland was a top performer for the Nanaimo club at the event, as she won gold in her U14 heavyweight division and also took gold in U16 middleweight. Bostyn MacDonald was also a double winner, with gold in U12 as well as gold in U14 middleweight.

Arron Boulding earned silver in U12 and was able to add gold in U14 lightweight.

Also winning gold were Hannah Darmadi in U16 heavyweight; Isabella Green, U16 lightweight; Jordan Budd, U14 heavyweight; Sam Johnston, U14 middle-lightweight; Connor Blackburn, U12; Mitchell Gauther, U10; Chase Budd, U10; Abi Boulding, U10; Ezikiel Moes, U10; and Philip Darmadi, U8.

Earning silver were Jindar Sboto, U16; Emma Richardson, U16 lightweight; Lars Lydersen, U12; Levi Moes, U12; Sayjah Vieaux, U12; and Angus Lee, U10.

Taking bronze were David Liu, U12; and Sofia Mack, U12.

Judo season continues for Nanaimo’s senior-level athletes, who will be participating in the Canadian Open Championships in Calgary at the end of May.
