Island’s high school basketball all-stars announced

Ten Nanaimo teens will play in the Vancouver Island Seniors Classic Basketball All-Star Games.

Ten Nanaimo players end their high school basketball careers as all-stars.

The rosters were announced Wednesday for the 30th annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic High School Basketball All-Star Games.

Three games will be held April 8 at the University of Victoria gym: a boys’ A game, a girls’ game and a boys’ B game.

Madeline Hart of Dover Bay, Taylor Olsen of Nanaimo District and Veronica Wong were chosen as all-stars and will represent the North Island girls’ team.

Alex Staniforth of Wellington, Ryan MacDonald and Jordan Gladstone of Dover Bay and Anders Cederberg of NDSS will play for the North team in the A all-star game, while Ibrahim Herwi of Barsby, Yas Tsuda of Wellington and Will Fridriksson of NDSS will play for the North in the B all-star game.

Vancouver Island University coaches will also be part of the event. Bill McWhinnie will coach the North girls’ team, Matt Kuzminski will coach the North A boys and Avneet Brar will coach the North’s B boys.

The boys’ B game is at 3 p.m., the girls play at 4:45 p.m. and then the boys’ A game ips off at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
