We’re staying on track this week, continuing our review of the recent Nanaimo District Elementary School Track and Field Championships with a look at top results in the three age groups of boys’ competition…
In the tyke (born 2007-08) division, Joe Madill from Cilaire won the 100-metre dash and finished third in 200m. Second and third in the 100m were Ashton Wolfe from Hammond Bay and Kyle Nickel of Frank J. Ney. Coal Tyee’s Harrison Munro was first in 200m with Fraser Smith from Gabriola second. Cilaire’s Holden West won the 600m, ahead of Felix Beaudoin of McGirr. In the 1,200m, Niall O’Hara from Chase River took first place and Pleasant Valley’s Rylan Clark second. Third in both 600m and 1,200m was Troy Lam from Mountain View.
With field events for tyke boys, top three long jumpers were Maverick Kolba from Cinnabar Valley, Ashton Wolfe of Hammond Bay and Mountain View’s Elliot Hosler. Keenan deWit of Forest Park was first in softball throw. Eli Pakosz of Cedar Elementary was second and Frank Linder from Hammond Bay third.
Turning to peewee (born 2005-06) boys’ track results, Marley MacDonald from Pleasant Valley was fastest in 100m. Brechin’s Daniel Oluwafemi was second and also took third place in 200m. Third in 100m was Luke Folz of Coal Tyee. First and second in 200m were Robi Bollinger from Cedar and Hunter McInnes Prawdzik from Hammond Bay. In the 600m and 1200m races, the top three finishers were the same. Patrick Canning of Park Avenue was first in both races, Dylan Barberie of Quarterway second and Mountain View’s Kynan Shurniak third.
Evan Taylor from Uplands Park was the top peewee boys’ long jumper, out-leaping Rock City’s Benedek Horvath and Departure Bay’s Felix Plendl. First in triple jump was Noah McCallum representing Quarterway, followed by Spencer Whitcomb from Cilaire and Jesse Hughes of Hammond Bay. Quarterway’s Sol Yeung won the shot put event and was second in discus. Carter Clark from Cinnabar Valley and Edmond He of Hammond Bay were second and third in shot put. Departure Bay athlete Zak Zhang was first in discus, with Gabriola’s Gill Parcher third. Tops in softball was MacDonald, with Jasen Bender of Mountain View third.
Track events for bantam (born 2003-04) boys featured Colton Samaroo from Fairview winning both the 100m and 200m. Hammond Bay’s Spencer Brown was second in both races, as well as in the 600m. Third in 100m, as well as first place in 600m, went to Max Holman from Rock City. Nate Paris from Hammond Bay claimed third in 200m, while Jayden Watson of Cinnabar Valley was third in 600m. Watson was first in 1200m, ahead of Cinnabar teammates Jake Putz and Michael Edwards.
In field events, the first-place long jumper was Paris, followed by William Merrill of McGirr and Holman. École Océane’s Israel Jackman was first in triple jump, Brown was second and Dakota Hummel from Georgia Avenue was third. Throwing events had Merrill winning the shot put. Benson Sabourin from Rock City was second and Cedar’s Jaden Pohl third. Jung Younghoon from Rock City won the discus throw, with Ben Martin from Pleasant Valley second and Luke Lavery of Cilaire third.
Total points accumulated during the district meet resulted in Cilaire placing first among small schools, followed by Pauline Haarer and Cinnabar Valley. For larger schools, Hammond Bay claimed the title ahead of Mountain View and Quarterway.
