Nanaimo’s all-star high school basketball players were difference-makers at the Island Seniors Classic.

The North team won two out of three all-star games at the event, held Saturday at the University of Victoria.

The North girls edged the South team 89-88 and the North’s B boys’ team got past the South’s B squad 79-71. In the boys’ A all-star game, the South prevailed 113-89.

In the A game, Ryan MacDonald of Dover Bay Secondary School was chosen most outstanding player as he scored a game-high 27 points in defeat. Wellington’s Alex Staniforth added 14 points.

In the girls’ game, Dover’s Madeline Hart scored 12 points for her team. Nanaimo’s Bill McWhinnie coached the North girls to victory.

Nanaimo’s Avneet Brar was coach of the winning North B boys’ team.

The Island Seniors Classic is held in Victoria annually for graduating Grade 12s. Nanaimo schools had 10 players make the all-star team.
