Ball season is starting up and a former Toronto Blue Jays champion is stepping to the plate to help minor baseball in Nanaimo.

Kelly Gruber, a member of the Jays’ 1992 World Series championship team, will be in town April 21 for the Serauxmen Sportsman Dinner at the Beban Park social centre. Paralympic champion Michelle Stilwell will be another guest speaker and there will also be a magician.

“We’re hoping to build on the momentum we created last year with the Robbie Alomar event, and just continue to raise money for the association and facilities and keep our profile high in the community,” said Mike Holyk, president of the Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association.

The event is a fundraiser for the NMBA and for the Serauxmen service club to put toward local youth sports. Minor baseball is raising money for a field lighting project at Serauxmen Stadium.

Tickets are $65 and are available at www.serauxmen.com.
