Acme Timbermen put win streak, first place on the line
The Acme Timbermen have found ways to win games and they’ve found a place atop the standings. Now they want to stay there.
Nanaimo’s West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association team is preparing for one of the toughest tests of the season to date – back-to-back home games against the second-placed Tri-City Bandits on Saturday (June 21) and Sunday.
“We want to really make a statement this weekend and show them that we’re as good as our record,” said Mike Maughan, coach of the Acme Painting Timbermen.
Nanaimo’s senior B squad (10-1-1) has a win streak that now stands at seven straight.
“Our guys have really just done a good job of finding ways to win games,” Maughan said. “[Sometimes] ugly games against lesser teams where maybe we haven’t played that well, but the bottom line is we’ve been getting the points.”
Jon Diplock, team captain, said the Acme T-men have adjusted well to lineup changes. Sometimes it takes three periods for them to build chemistry, but it always seems to work out.
“It’s good that we can find ways to win. We always stick it out till the end,” Diplock said.
It will take more than just perseverance to beat the Bandits. The T-men have been talking this week about staying disciplined and limiting turnovers.
“Every possession counts. We can’t be throwing the ball away,” Diplock said. “Tri-City always seems to find a way to get us back for our bad mistakes so we’ve got to have two mistake-free games.”
The senior B T-men are well aware of their win streak and they want to keep it going, Diplock said.
“If we play to our level and we limit our mistakes, we’ll have a really good chance,” said Maughan.
There’s still a way to go till the post-season, but there could be a playoff atmosphere.
“It’s two teams that should be in the Presidents Cup,” Diplock said. “It’s not every day you see lacrosse games like this.”
GAME ON … The Saturday (June 21) game is at 7 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre and Sunday’s game is at 5 p.m. at the NIC. Tickets will be available at the door.
