Barsby beats Ballenas in Border Battle
The Barsby Bulldogs won, but the Ballenas Whalers made sure it was a battle.
John Barsby Secondary School’s AA varsity football team won the Border Battle game 22-7 Friday night at Merle Logan Field.
The game attracted one of the largest high school football crowds in Nanaimo in recent memory.
"It sure propelled the players forward," said Rob Stevenson, Barsby coach.
And with the Atlas Truss Border Battle Trophy, bragging rights and divisional positioning on the line, as well, there was plenty to play for.
“Regardless of record, both teams are going to come out and play a very good game and that’s what happened again,” said Stevenson. “We came out on top but it was closely contested by our opponents.”
Kalven Kellock caught two touchdown passes, first a 38-yard reception from Brody Taylor, then a 26-yard connection from North Rainey. Brandon Parker had Barsby’s other major, a one-yard rush.
Parker Bowles made seven tackles and Shawn Arabsky and Cole Virtanen had interceptions.
GAME ON … Barsby hosts Spectrum this Friday (Oct. 11) in exhibition play at 7 p.m. at Merle Logan Field. Earlier that day, the Nanaimo District Islanders will host the Whalers at 1:45 p.m. at Merle Logan.
