City’s cyclocross riders pedal with best

Local cyclocross riders were competitive with the best in the world at a major event in the U.S. last week.

Nanaimoites travelled to Louisville, Ky., to participate in the International Cycling Union’s Cyclocross Masters World Championships.

Derek Steel, racing for Arrowsmith Bikes, was fourth in the 70-plus division, Janna Gillick of the Mid-Island Velo Association came seventh in the women’s 35-39 class and Norm Thibault of Frontrunners was 11th in the men’s 45-49 division. Wendy Simms placed 22nd in the elite women’s race after an early crash put her out of contention.
