The Nanaimo Palladian Pirates put together an excellent regular season to put themselves in the hunt for a championship.

The junior Pirates (33-15) host the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League championships starting Friday (July 29) at Serauxmen Stadium and the Serauxmen Sports Fields.

The league's eight best teams will be in town for the big tourney, and the home team will be competitive – manager Jordan Blundell said the juniors have played beyond their years this summer.

"The whole year's been fairly consistent. The guys you rely on to make plays make playes, we get good at bats throughout most of our games," he said. “It’s a good group, they play well together."

Blundell said the team success this season helped the individual development of the players.

"They believe in their ability," he said. "We play hard, we practise hard and when you see that result it is reassuring that hey, this is working, let's keep doing what we're doing."

GAME ON … Nanaimo, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will play all its tournament games at the stadium. The first one is Friday at 10 a.m. against the Abbotsford Cardinals; on Saturday the Palladian Pirates play the Okanagan Athletics at 12:30 p.m. and the Langley Blaze at 5:30 p.m. Sunday's championship final goes at 4:30 p.m.
