Coal Miners ball team prevails
The games might have been closer than they needed to be, but the Nanaimo Coal Miners are happy to take the wins.
The city’s Pacific International League baseball team won a pair of exhibition contests on Sunday at Serauxmen Stadium, sweeping the Victoria Dodgers by scores of 7-6 and 3-2.
The first game was the more dramatic of the two. The Miners built a solid lead, then gave it back and needed a walk-off single from Ben Cairns in the bottom of the seventh inning to win. Cairns ended up 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cole McKaig went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Bill Hadden earned the win on the mound in relief.
In the second game, Joey Benda threw five shutout innings for the win and Greg Wallace led the Coal Miners’ offence with a two-run triple.
GAME ON … The Coal Miners play four PIL games this weekend, visiting Burnaby Saturday (June 18) then hosting Coquitlam Sunday at noon and 2:30 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium.
