Spread the love with crosswalks

Put crosswalks in different subdivisions around Nanaimo

Re: Colour more crosswalks, Editorial, April 6.

I do agree that two more rainbow crosswalks would add to the LGBTQ parade festivities in June. But year-round not everyone goes downtown or goes often. I think a better way to maximize the effect of the city’s support is to ‘spread the love’ and put crosswalks in different subdivisions around Nanaimo. I think by the hospital would be an amazing location.

The city was honourable enough to paint two downtown crosswalks last year in rainbow colours. Now, this year, some of Nanaimo’s proactive gay community want the other two crosswalks painted as well. It may be a modest request as you say in your editorial, but when you state “we need them” it shows much bias. That well-given symbolism you write of has already been shown. And changes from a white crosswalk, painted universally in white because of extensive research and safety, was only supposed to be temporary for Pride Week.

If more symbolism in crosswalks are needed as you feel, it is time to let the many other organizations, groups and lifestyles in Nanaimo be given the time and place for the city to show the same admiration for them as well.
