No reason to rush any dam decision
To the Editor,
Re: Colliery dam saga can’t keep dragging on, Opinion, Aug. 19.
It is true that over $2 million dollars has now been spent on the Colliery dams. Most of the first half went to the ill-conceived plan for removal of the two dams based on an impending emergency. The most current information received is that the dams would not disintegrate in an earthquake. Furthermore, there would be very little consequence to people downstream as a result of the highly unlikely possibility of the dams actually failing. This latest effort by the city to portray them as suddenly a huge menace because of a mythical flood runs contrary to what we now know. We do not support spending millions for a problem that likely does not exist.
Before spending millions more and doing serious damage to the park, the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society has urged patience in order to get the facts and then decide what is required. If this had been done years ago we would have saved a great deal of time and money and avoided considerable angst for everyone involved. It is still not too late to get it right. We have time.
