Municipality should be trying to help SPCA

To the Editor,

Re: Let SPCA build its own shelter, Editorial, June 26.

I’m sorry the writer has such a negative attitude of the SPCA. I’m sure there are a lot of like-minded people who know nothing about the good things done by the SPCA. While these people might not go so far as to condone violence and cruelty, it continues all the same.

The SPCA spends considerable finances to charge and prosecute the worst offenders of cruelty, something governments should be doing. Unfortunately it is left to animal lovers and responsible citizens to provide funds. No one has to donate if they wish, but to go so far as to criticize the SPCA and suggest they use “cute little puppy dogs making puppy dog eyes” to manipulate people into donating is insulting.

I hope the City of Nanaimo can help in some way to assist this charity to get into its new facility.
