City manager right person for job
To the Editor.
Re: Manager draws on gridiron lessons, Sept. 19.
Thank you for your profile regarding our new city manager, Ted Swabey.
There is no doubt that this position can be incredibly difficult and has considerable weight of responsibility to staff and the public. No one should take this role without acknowledging that there will be numerous challenges.
Like many others, I was concerned that the lead for city management came, once again, from within, and avoided a formal and open process of selection. There have been patterns developed over many years as to how the city has been run and some changes to this approach are necessary.
I had the opportunity to meet with Swabey personally regarding the dams issue and came away thinking that he may be the right person at this time. His statements show a willingness to follow a different path of management and accepting of alternatives that may present themselves.
It has taken some courage on the part of our council and staff to reconsider and allow for the time to plan appropriately for Colliery Dams Park. With steady and calm guidance, I am confident that we can get things right this time.
Now, if the school board would be willing to follow this example and reconsider their proposed facilities plan, the city may be on the right track after all.
