‘Happy holidays’ includes everyone

To the Editor,

It’s that month for endless reruns of black and white movie classics starring Alistair Sim or Jimmy Stewart;  for usually staid bosses to surprise their employees by letting their hair down at the workplace party; and for credit cards to be taken to the limit to purchase the latest gadgetry.

December is also a time for those of a certain religious persuasion to bombard radio talk shows with resentful and acrimonious complaints, and to write letters to the editor expressing their indignation should they see a “happy holidays” or a “season’s greetings” message displayed.

They get really incensed if they hear politically correct bureaucrats referring to “winter holiday season” and “holiday tree.”

For them everything except “Merry Christmas” is sacrilegious and strictly off-limits.

With so many different festivals falling around the same time,  why can’t everyone be included in year-end celebrations without the religious types getting so bent out of shape?

Why not say “happy holidays” to include everybody?
