To the editor,

Having now gone through a complete cycle with the automated pickup containers I can state with certainty that at least for me this expensive new system leaves a lot to be desired.

Nanaimo is a hilly city and for those of us with long or steep driveways these new monster containers are both heavy and awkward. Unfortunately they are too big to fit in the trunk of a car so there is no alternative to physically wheeling them around – quite an undertaking for anyone not in the prime of life or physical condition.

While there may be an eventual saving to the taxpayer in the adoption of this system, I have not seen any calculations showing either the break-even or eventual pay-back time and wonder if anyone in the city actually had the foresight to do the math or whether in typical form they just bulled ahead.

Garry Bradford, Nanaimo
