To the editor,

Re: Apartment construction up during start of 2019, March 12.

A senior economics analyst says that there hasn’t been purpose-built rental housing since the late 1970s, and he doesn’t know why. It’s not a mystery. In the late 1970s the federal government cancelled tax breaks for the construction of rental housing. The result? An almost immediate stoppage of this kind of building.

The mystery to me is why haven’t members of the construction industry and representatives of municipal, provincial and federal governments campaigned to have these tax breaks restored? They were clearly effective.
