To the editor,

Re: Orphaned orca calf swims out of B.C. lagoon after being trapped for weeks, April 26.

So, the young killer whale ‘trapped’ for weeks in the small inlet on Vancouver Island has finally left – on her own, and on her own terms, (wee morning hours, in the darkness, at high tide), despite all the high-tech equipment and apparatus available – perhaps she had finished mourning her dead mother. Perhaps her breaching and playful behaviour as she swam under the bridge to deeper, wider waters was her way of thanking the people there.

Perhaps modern man in all his cleverness is missing something.

Deep gratitude and applause to all the rescuers for their perseverance and dedication in caring for her, (especially the Ehattesaht and Nuchatlaht First Nations), and the attempts to save the youngster – a sharp contrast in attitude from those ignorant and tragic days of whaling when her kind was relentlessly and brutally hunted.

Dichotomies indeed.
