To the editor:

Nanaimo makes with the jazz!

Many thanks to the city for its support of our second annual Nanaimo International Jazz Festival. It was a wonderful success due to our many sponsors and donors, the board of the Nanaimo International Jazz Festival Association and our many volunteers and members who helped us make a home for jazz in Nanaimo.

More than 100 professional Vancouver Island musicians tooted, whomped, sang and syncopated to the delight of all who heard them in downtown Nanaimo. We could not have produced this Festival without them performing on our many stages.

Our headliner from New York City, the Charles Mingus Dynasty Quintet, played a stunning artistic concert, as well as presenting a workshop for students. The Mingus Dynasty also sat in with local bands and participated in the hottest jam session we’ve ever experienced in Nanaimo. At our gala, Jennifer Scott was a sensation – singing with the Victoria Jazz Orchestra directed by Monik Nordine.

Despite the Saturday rain, our New Orleans parade proved that good music and great fun can defy inclement weather. Jazz was heard on the Diana Krall Plaza – as it should be – and in front of the cannons at Pioneer Plaza.

NIJFA now looks forward to producing its third annual Jazz Festival in September 2019 – as well as producing jazz events throughout the year.

Andrew Homzy, president, Nanaimo International Jazz Festival Association
