To those who believe Buttertubs Marsh is a public park suitable for use as a running track. In fact Buttertubs Marsh Conservation Area is a wildlife sanctuary owned by the Nature Trust of British Columbia. That’s why dogs and bicycles are not permitted on most paths. Having large numbers of runners also seems at odds with its goal of providing breeding areas for wildlife.
All users of the marsh should try to behave so they don’t disturb the wildlife. Attached is a picture of a bushtits’ nest, close to one of the walkways, and the proud parents who built it. Having this nest abandoned, because of hordes of people running and yelling close by, would be a great shame.
Nanaimo has many public parks where dogs, bicycles and runners are welcome and an appropriate use.
