Beef. Why do so called ‘friends’ ignore you once they have managed to get themselves a free vacation by using your facilities? These people are nowhere to be seen afterwards, no calls, no invitations.

BOUQUET To the wonderful person who found my phone with my driver’s licence in the case in the parking lot at Maffeo Sutton Park. This Good Samaritan put my phone in the door handle. I was beside myself when I discovered I didn’t have my phone halfway through my walk. Thank you.

BEEF There are not enough doctors in Nanaimo or walk-in clinics. Please, we need more.

BOUQUET To the amazing members of Nanaimo Fire and Rescue, RCMP and paramedics who showed up minutes after a major fire exploded at our neighbour’s house. On a freezing, snowy day, excellent communications and extremely high level of professionalism. Despite the frightening circumstances, it was an honour and privilege to watch all of these first responders at work. Thank you for your service.

BEEF To the bakery employee who offered free samples to everyone in line, but me. Your business might’ve received accolades in the past, but not on this day.

BOUQUET To the gentleman who went out of his way to return a piece of ID I lost while out walking in the Departure Bay area. Thank you just doesn’t cut it. You’ve regained my trust in humanity.

BEEF To the dog owners who let their dogs poop on the Harbourfront Walkway and don’t pick it up. Shame on you.

BOUQUET A big thank you to technician Joel at Barron’s Home Appliance Centre for fixing my dishwasher. Joel was very skilled, friendly, and informative.

BEEF To the airport’s food service. Only vending machines airside, that are sometimes broken, and very limited on the groundside. Why wasn’t better food service included in the recent expansion? The Comox Valley Airport has two great cafés, one groundside and one airside. Both have delicious local baked goods, sandwiches, and lighter fare, plus a variety of hot and cold beverages.

BOUQUET To Dr. Rudston-Brown and all his wonderful caring staff at the colonoscopy clinic in NRGH. I was very fearful to have a colonoscopy. However, they were all so calming and friendly. It was way easier than I thought it would be. Thanks a million.

BEEF To the beefer about citizens flying the Canadian ensign upside-down at overpasses. Firstly this is not desecration of the flag. If you know anything about international protocol for flying the flag, it is the internationally recognized sign for someone in distress. If you do not think we are in distress, then I would suggest you have the flag pulled over your head.

BOUQUET To the person who suggested hooking up the generator to the gas furnace. We had a six-hour power outage last weekend and it was great to have heat during that time.

BEEF To a building materials store which set the policy that all returns are subject to a minimum 15 per cent re-stocking charge. Please be aware that you are not unique and not the only choice as well, customers have plenty of choices, of course, to select your competitors.

BOUQUET To Robert. Hoping to have you re-join us on the seniors’ softball field in April. You are missed.

BEEF Why do so called ‘friends’ ignore you once they have managed to get themselves a free vacation by using your facilities? These people are nowhere to be seen afterwards, no calls, no invitations.

BOUQUET Thanks to Dr. Trachter, the nurses and amazing staff at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, also to paramedics, who went over and above the call for my husband when he fell down the stairs. You should always be proud of your staff, doctors, nurses, volunteers and all staff who make such difficult times a little more easy with their kindness and compassion.

BEEF To the dude at Sixth and Bruce who thinks that stop signs don’t apply to folks on e-bikes who are riding with traffic. You’ve got a very hard lesson coming your way.

BOUQUET To Sandy at Fabricland for her help finding the appropriate material to mend my son’s favourite jacket. She went out of her way to find something suitable and as far as customer service goes, she is tops in my book.

BEEF To whoever takes care of the parkway. Please clear the drains, there’s so many huge puddles. I haven’t seen any of your trucks around, even when it snowed.

BOUQUET To the wonderful person who left a grocery gift card with the nice lady at a local grocery store to be given to a person of the store employee’s choice. I was chosen. When funds are so painfully low, this was a wonderful surprise. Thank you so very much.

BEEF To people who drive behind buses and then honk their horns whenever they stop. Buses have to stop in order to serve the bus stops. Furthermore, the bus is a regional service – they literally have more right to be on the road than you do. If you can’t be patient enough to wait a few seconds, perhaps you should be the ones taking the bus.

BOUQUET To Lynsey, again. You’re kind of the best. Better than Nicolas Cage and pickles.

BEEF To the snow. With gloomy weather taking six months out of the year, winter needs to realize it’s worn out its welcome by now. Get lost. Bouquet to my kitties for being the only family members who don’t roll their eyes when I grumble about this.

BOUQUET To Nanaimo Foodshare, Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and to the other organizations that help the less fortunate and those truly in need of food assistance. Thank you and God bless you to those who donate and volunteer.

BEEF The sewage pump station on Seventh Street cost overrun of 90 per cent takes the project from $538,000 to $1.024 million. New works yard estimated at $163 million. At the same 90 per cost overrun it would come in at $309.7 million. What a deal.

BOUQUET To the person who submitted her friend Gladys’s tip regarding removing stains. Thanks for sharing but can you tell me (through another Beefs & Bouquets submission) if the method works on older stains or just fresh ones? Thanks.

BEEF To the developer of affordable housing. Your projects will be unaffordable for the taxpayer when they are torn down in a few years due to mould and rot due to your poor construction practices.

BOUQUET To B.C. Ferries for figuring out that ships in refit over the summer peak period jeopardizes max service delivery.

BEEF To the neighbours in Lantzville who feel it’s OK to let their cats out to roam. We don’t appreciate your cats turning the gardens around our entrance and under our windows into their cat toilet. We have also witnessed them killing birds on our property. I love birds but cats not at all. Keep your cats on your own property.

BOUQUET To Yellow Submarine Plumbing for their awesome service, quick response time, careful explanations of issues, and no-pressure sales tactics. Thanks to them, a ridiculous mistake by another plumbing company has been remedied and our home feels much safer.

BEEF To transit management for not putting money toward clean buses. There is no staffing for basic cleaning of public transportation. The offices of staff buildings are cleaned regularly with no end in cost but simple, clean buses are secondary. People deserve better.

BOUQUET To everyone wanting the Neck Point parking lot paved. I agree, but it’s built on a marsh. The new bathroom is sitting on nearly 10 feet of imported material. It would be too expensive to justify a small lot like that being built. Sorry.

BEEF To the couple in the Rocky Point area that daily throw apples into the vacant lot. The deer you think that you are helping are now basically tame and dependent. Very ignorant behaviour that harms them in the long run.

BOUQUET To Highview Optical. Great service. They make sure you are 100 per cent satisfied and they know their stuff. Laura and Edie, thanks.

BEEF To the bylaws and officers who enforce them. If you aren’t going to enforce the bylaws why do we have them?

BOUQUET To the talented Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra for the amazing concert at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. It was much appreciated.

BEEF To the beefers complaining about bike lanes. We have been pandering to the auto and fossil fuel industries for over 100 years. It will take time to make the change to active transportation and the transition is going to be a little painful. These are not vanity projects, they are survival projects. Be patient, maybe go for a walk or bike ride and calm down.

BOUQUET To Quinn at MicroVision for his fast and friendly service when I had computer challenges. Very impressive.
