School board's safety priorities misguided
To the Editor,
Re: Dam hazard concerns school district, Sept. 3.
I am curious why Jamie Brennan and the rest of the school trustees believe it is their role to decide what risk mitigation should be chosen for the Colliery dams.
It has been established that removing the dams is not the only risk mitigation possible and we didn’t hear a peep out of said board members all last year (dams haven’t changed since last year and we now know them to be safer).
I acknowledge, as has been shown in the reports, that the spillways and dam deficiencies need to be addressed and there are methods and means to do that. However, the school board weighing in on the methods used is very curious to me, especially given that there isn’t the same degree of concern for schools that have yet to be seismically upgraded. That would seem to be a better focus since there would be far more children affected if we were to have an earthquake than from our piddly dams.
