William R. “Bill” Harris

August 12, 1938 - November 5, 2010

It is with enormous sadness that we announce the death of an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He passed away peacefully and painlessly, and spent his last few days surrounded by his family and loyal, loving friends. He will be sadly missed by his cherished wife of 50 years, Mary; his sons: Michael (Carol) and Paul (Andrea); his granddaughters: Madeleine, Emma and Tess; his brother Jack (Marjorie) and so many wonderful friends.

Although he lost his battle with cancer, the disease never diminished his spirit and he was incredibly strong, for those around him right until the end. Bill fought his illness with courage and dignity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, patience, kindness and strength.

As a teacher in Nanaimo, Bill had a tremendous influence on so many of his students and colleagues for over 30 years. He was admired and respected by so many for his commitment to education. His passion for adventure, and great sense of humor, combined to make him a man that was eager to experience the world, and share all of it with his loved ones.

The family owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Dr Edward Cancade for his exceptional care over the years, especially during Bill’s final days. Also, they would like to thank the staff of the 5th floor at NRGH and the Palliative Care Unit.

In accordance with Bill’s wishes, there will be no funeral. The family will have a celebration of his life at a later date. Those wishing to do so, may make a donation in Bill’s name to the British Columbia Cancer Agency, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC, V8R 6V5.
