Anderson, Thora Ruth (Cochrane)
Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 12, 2003. Thora leaves her loving husband of 52 years, Jack Anderson, sons Grant (Kathy), Greg (Carol) of Vancouver, B.C. and daughter Judy of Nanaimo. Thora is also survived by her sisters Margaret Leeck, Shirley Peterson and Janet Andersen, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Thora was born on February 3, 1928, the eldest daughter of William H. Cochrane and Lillian R. Cochrane. Thora attended John Shaw High School, graduating in 1945 and later graduated from the Provinial Normal School. Thora taught at East Wellington and in Penticton before returning to Nanaimo to marry Jack in 1951. Thora became a member of the First Baptist Church in 1946 and had a lifelong commitment to serving the Lord. It was her joy to participate in the compilation of the centenary history of the church in 1989. Thora founded Townsite Kindergarten in 1958 and taught many current Nanaimo residents. Thora later taught kindergarten at Northfield and Departure Bay Elementary Schools before retiring in 1983. Thora served as president to the Nanaimo District Teacher’s Association, a director of Haven House and was involved with the Nanaimo Chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Thora was an avid swimmer and for years she swam lengths early in the morning at Beban Pool. Many friends and family members enjoyed the hospitality of Thora and Jack at their waterfront home at Departure Bay. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robin Love and Nanaimo Home/Community Care for their wonderful support. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 1650 Waddington Road on Saturday, May 17, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Thora’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Haven House, Nanaimo/Community Care or the Union Gospel Mission.
