HUMPHRIES, Margaret T.

(nee White)

Dearly beloved wife of Gordon Humphries passed away peacefully at home in Ladysmith, British Columbia in the place she loved and cherished on August 20, 2008. Margaret was born on May 8, 1921 and was raised in Toronto in a loving and close knit family with her two sisters. She attended the University of Toronto and graduated as a physiotherapist, following which she worked for a period of time at the Royal Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. She then joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Sub-Lieutenant (Special Branch) Physiotherapist. While she was serving in the Navy at HMCS Cornwallis she met her husband, Gordon. They married on June 14, 1945 and moved to Edmonton, Alberta after they were both discharged from service. In 1951 Gordon and Margaret settled in Calgary, Alberta where they raised their 4 daughters and Margaret was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Gordon and Margaret lived in Calgary until they retired to their dream home in Ladysmith, British Columbia in July 1986. Margaret was raised with a strong sense of social justice that carried on through her entire life. Her compassion for those less fortunate knew no bounds. She was kind, giving, caring and generous. She gave of herself throughout her life through many volunteer endeavours and touched the life of every person she met, no matter what the circumstance. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 63 years, Gordon, her daughters, Susan Humphries (Richard Domin), Shelagh Dann, Catherine Humphries and Jennifer McCormick. She was predeceased by her sister, Jessie White in August 2007 and is also survived by her much loved sister, Dorothy White, in Toronto, Ontario. Margaret was blessed to have 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, who will miss their “Nana.” A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at Chemainus United Church, 9814 Willow Street, Chemainus, British Columbia at 2:00 p.m. on August 26, 2008. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.
