December 29, 2003

Ireland, Loraleigh

passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, on September 19, 1926. She was a resident of Berwick on the Lake. She will be missed by her daughter Shelley Cantelon and Ron, grandchildren Arthur and Abigail of Nanaimo, son Randall and Jacquie and grandson Luke of Pitt Meadows, her brother Bill Madison and Marge of Toronto, nephews David and Marcia, Dennis and Margo, niece Cindy and Gary, cousin Tina Atley and many friends at Berwick on the Lake and Cameron Island. Loraleigh was predeceased by her nephew Jim. Loraleigh was a very sucessful independent businesswoman before it became fashionable to be so recognized. A graduate in Psychiatric Nursing, she founded and operated the Royal Crest Convalescent Home in New Westminster, B.C. This facility was one of the first to accept residents of both sexes as well as providing transitional services for patients from Essondale. Politics was also one of her passions. She was a tireless worker in numerous campaigns. Later she volunteered as a Usher at the Port Theatre and enjoyed “sleepovers” by her grandchildren. The family would like to thank the kind attention of Dr. J. Weight, the helpfulness of Maureen and staff at Berwick and especially the support of Marlene Tulak. A celebration of her life was held at the Mount Benson Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 7 at 2:00pm. It was requested that people wear something bright as Loraleigh loved a good party. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the charity of your choice.
