In Loving Memory of

Newall, Joy (Nee Powell)

March 5, 1929 - November 6, 2010

Joy’s life is being celebrated by those she leaves behind including; her soul mate and beloved husband Bob, along with her daughters and step-sons, sons and daughters’ in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many extended family members, friends and associates who cherished her.

Joy was born in Australia and at 26 travelled to Canada.  She spent many years in Ontario raising her three children and writing television at the CBC.  In 1982 she relocated to Vancouver Island where she met and married her treasured partner Bob.  Together they travelled the world and worked on behalf of many important causes including equality for women and the First Nations of BC.  Joy was a beacon of hope and reason and worked to leave this world a better place for all children.

Joy celebrated her faith through the Quaker Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was active in the Interfaith Community.  Many will remember her as a gifted writer, leader, mentor, talented gardener and cook, potter, teacher, friend and peaceful activist.  She was honoured with a Margaret Collier Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 for her body of work.

A celebration of life will be held at Bethlehem Retreat Centre, 2371 Arbot Rd, Nanaimo BC, Thursday, November 25, 2010, 1:30 - 4:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joy’s memory to: The Alzheimer’s Society of BC.”
