John Baptiste Hugh Girard


Taken suddenly on Saturday September 30th at home while doing what the loved.


John was born in LeMans, France on November 13, 1929 and came to Canada as a small boy. He lived in Cedar and Nanaimo area for the last 70 years. He is survived and greatly missed by Geraldine, his loving wife of 50 years, two sons, Michael (Carol), Jerome (Karen), his daughter Melinda Wilde (Don) and eleven grandchildren; Rebecca, Brock, Matthew, Maria, Susanna, Daniel, Johnny, Derek, Thomas, Emma and William. All of whom could always count on him for help in anyway. He leaves to mourn him two brother, Peter (Kathy) and Joe (Mickey) and three sisters, Charlotte, Marie (Wilf) and Theresa, extended family and friends.


John began his career at Harmac in 1949 and continued there for 28 years. He was able to retire early and pursue his many and diverse hobbies, fishing with his sons and grandsons, painting, a passion he shared with his daughter, bee keeping, gardening, skiing, square dancing, tennis, walking and a general love of nature.


Always a helper, John was active at Trinity Ecumenical Center as building chairman, the Federation of Canadian Artists as vice president, the Horticultural Society, and for many years, Scouts Canada as a Cub, Scout and Venturer leader.

A funeral Mass and Celebration of John’s life will be held at Trinity Catholic Church on Friday, October 6 at 11 am., reception to follow*.


By request of the family, and with thanks, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory, to the B.C. Heart and Stroke Foundation P.O. Box 1751m 48-91 Front Street, Nanaimo V9R 5N3.


*Burial to follow reception at Townsite Cemetery in Nanaimo.
