September 12, 1924 – June 28, 2017

After over 92 years of enjoying life, Joan passed away peacefully in Nanaimo with her family by her side. Joan is now reunited with ‘her Toby’ who passed away April 18, 2014. Joan will be greatly missed by all those who knew her but especially by her family. Children; Nancy Stern (Harvey), Jack Brown (Yvonne), Grandchildren; Wayne Stern, David Brown, Darren Stern (Michelle), Meagan Autrey (Billy) and her precious Great Grandchildren; Saige & Mason Stern and Parker Autrey. The special times we’ve had with Mom, Grammy and Great Gram will live in our hearts forever.

Joan was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was an executive secretary for the CPR in Vancouver during the 1940’s. In 1947 Joan married Toby in Flin Flon, Manitoba and they made their way to Victoria, B.C. in 1950. They found themselves in Nanaimo in 1960 and pursued many adventures from their home in Departure Bay. Special memories include Dad’s Hockey career, Mom’s Monday coffee group, salmon fishing the Five Fingers, camping & fishing at Clayton’s Resort, boat touring, curling, golf, Legion 256 meat draws, the Village on the Green gang and many exciting years wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Mom was the last of this generation of Brown’s and we will always remember the good times the extended family shared together.

Joan’s life was well lived, rich and full of wonderful family and friends. We would like to thank the staff and friends in Origin at Longwood and the Hospice volunteers and staff at the Palliative Care Unit for making sure Mom was always well cared for. There is no service as per request, but we encourage you to celebrate your time with & memories of Joan in your own special way.

Donations in Joan’s memory can be made to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation, #102-1802 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, B.C. V9S 1H1
