James (Jim) Hirst

October 25, 2017

Died by suicide October 25, 2017 after a courageous battle with mental health and addiction.

Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years Brenda, son John (Crystal) grandaughter Harper, daughter Anastasia (John).

Jim, a native son of Nanaimo was the youngest of Robert and Connie Hirst (deceased). An avid hunter, fisherman and all around outdoor enthusiast, he instilled in his family a deep appreciation for all things in nature. After a career at Harmac for 32 years, Jim completed the Resource Management Officer Technology course at VIU. He was a valued member in his classes, where he continued to share his passion for the outdoors with others.

Jim was naturally able to turn his hand at almost anything, and believed in the pursuit of perfecting a myriad of skills. From operating his boat to teaching himself to weld he encouraged his friends and family to try new things and to be curious of what possibilities surrounded us all.

In his last years he shared his compassionate and caring nature with those in need as a community support worker. He was a brilliant and talented man.

Jim's greatest joy was his family. He was so proud of his children, their partners and his grandchild. Jim deeply believed in the documentary his daughter and her fiance are in the process of filming. 'Equus: Healing Through Horses' is the first documentary of its kind outlining the ways in which people work through trauma and mental health afflictions through Equine Facilitated Therapy.

He would want his daughter to continue that journey in hopes of helping others find healing.

Our family believes strongly in being open with the world about Jim's battle with mental health that resulted in his suicide. We want to help others by removing the stigma and silence that prevents people from asking for the help they need.

If you or someone you know is struggling , please accept the help and support around you. You are never alone or without love, even when your mind tries to convince you of it.

A celebration of life will be held on the weekend of Nov. 11th or 12th and will be announced on facebook. Or text Brenda @ 250-713-8073
