SOUTHERN, Isabella
July 3, 1914 - April 11, 2009
Our wonderful mother Isabella "Belle" Southern (nee Frazer) passed away peacefully at Chemainus Health Care Centre on Saturday, April 11, 2009. Born and raised in Nanaimo, she met there, the love of her life, Gilbert, and they subsequently married April 14, 1938. They spent their married years living in Trail, Youbou and Chemainus. She was an active member of the community and spent many years as a member of the Women's Benefit Association. In her younger years she was quite the softball player and later on came to enjoy bowling and playing bingo. Extraordinarily talented at knitting and crocheting, she donated many, many beautiful pieces to the Chemainus Hospital Auxiliary. She loved animals and raised many dogs, cats, and budgies. A loving and strong willed person who cared deeply for her family, Belle was indeed the family matriarch, and as her family can attest "nobody argued with Gramma". She is now at peace with her loving husband, Gilbert, deceased 1977; and grandson Gary Southern, deceased 1981. She will be sadly missed by her sons Walter (Nancy), Harry (Sherrill), and George (Penny); her daughter, Glenda Sharpe (Tom); her grandchildren, Sheila Southern-Lloyd (Kerry), Darren, Clint (Barb), Lori and Jason (Nicole) Southern, Dennis and Bryan Sharpe; great-grandchildren Haleigh and Hunter Lloyd, Sarah Ellis, Hayley Yeomans and Hannah Southern. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Chemainus Health Care for their excellent care of Belle over the past three and a half years. Arrangements entrusted to Sands Funeral Chapel, Duncan, BC. There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chemainus Health Care Centre.
