June 28, 1938 - May 4, 2017

Hilda Broeckling passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2017. Born in Prussia, now Poland, on June 28th, 1938, Hilda was a prisoner of war from age 6-10. Released from prison into West Germany, she was reunited with her family and in 1957, she joined her brother, Kurt, in Canada. She fondly recalls this as the smartest thing she ever did in her life.

She met the love of her life, George, in 1958 and they married almost 58 years ago on June 27, 1959. In 1964, she gave birth to their first and only child, Garry. Moving from Calgary, to Los Angeles, back to Germany, and returning to Canada again, Hilda and George settled in British Columbia, where she raised their son, worked for Sears Canada, and ran a contracting company building homes with her husband, eventually moving to Nanaimo. With a love of traveling, Hilda and George spent their retirement years exploring North America via van, trailer, and motor home. While in Nanaimo, Hilda enjoyed spending her free time at the Beban Park Pool, and cherished the many friendships she made there over the years. She will be remembered by her family as a strong woman who nurtured everyone one around her with her love, concern, and amazing cooking.

She leaves behind her loving husband George, and son Garry (Nicole), her sister Frieda Schattling, brother Kurt (Jessie) Daust, nephew David (Karen) Daust, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins in Germany.

There will be no service, and condolences can be sent to First Memorial Funeral Services in Nanaimo.
