Herbert Kenneth Addison

1957-2006

Herbert Kenneth Addison was born on January 29th, 1957, the son of Walker and Marion Addison. Eager to enter the world, Herb was born 2 months prematurely and spent his first months in an incubator at Nanaimo Hospital. Herb grew up in Harewood, and just couldn’t wait to finish school. To Herb, it wasn’t about how many questions you got right or wrong, or what grade you received – it was all about finishing first! Instead, Herb kept his thoughts in the clouds and above: growing up he was infatuated with astronomy and the space program. It was an interest he kept for his entire life.

For good or for bad, Herb was not afraid to be himself. He chose his friends wisely and with great care. When it came to animals, Herb never met a dog, cat or other animal that he didn’t like or wouldn’t help. But most important to Herb was his family: especially his son, Chris, and grandson, Joshua. He is also survived by siblings Chris, Dave, Donna, Arlene and Wendy.

He was a quiet man that enjoyed a simple life. He was always comfortable in his trademark jeans and long-sleeved shirt, even in the heat of summer. Herb preferred to remain in the background and out of the limelight, except when he was telling a joke.

Herb passed away on March 1st, 2006 at the age of 49. Given his early and difficult start to life and his continuing struggle with the disease of addiction, perhaps we had him for 49 years more than we thought we would.

“See you later, old timer!”

An informal gathering of family and friends to share their thoughts and memories, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11th, 2006 at 2613 Rosstown Road. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nanaimo SPCA (www.spca.bc.ca/nanaimo) or Edgewood Foundation (www.edgwood.ca) would be appreciated.
