MACK, Harold

1922 - 2008

Born in Woolwich, England on May 17, 1922. Harold passed away peacefully at the Lodge on 4th in Ladysmith on Sept. 21, 2008 after a long illness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Winifred, of 64 years, children John (Pamela), Doreen (Cliff), and Peter (Cath), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At the outset of WW II, Harold was serving as a machinist apprentice at the British Air Ministry armament shop, where he remained for the duration of the war. He joined the RAF shortly after the war and later worked for the Harland and Wolff ship repair yard in London. He and Winifred were married on July 1, 1944, during a V-I air-raid.

In 1957, the Macks immigrated to Canada, living initially in Duncan, and then a year later moving to Nanaimo. Harold worked as a machinist for S. Madill Ltd. until 1978.

Harold and Win moved to Ladysmith in 1980. Always interested in, and knowledgeable about machinery, Harold was active in the Ladysmith Railway Society. He was also a keen sailor (in his sailboat built entirely by his own hand) and a traveller across North America and Mexico in his motorhome.

The family would like to thank the excellent staff of the Lodge on 4th for their kindness, and Dr. Chris Fritsch for all his help over the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Myasthenia Gravis Association of BC, 2805 Kingsway, Vancouver BC, V5R 5H9 would be appreciated.

A memorial service to be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo at 2:00 PM on Saturday, Sept. 27. A reception to follow at 3262 Serab Place, Nanaimo.
