Fred Grounds

August 11, 2010

Fred Grounds passed away peacefully on Aug. 11, 2010 at the Nanaimo Seniors Village with his wife by his side. Fred was one of five children born to Joseph and Alice Grounds on July 8, 1918 in Nanaimo.

After leaving the army Fred married the love of his life Doreen Robinson in 1949, and had four sons; Gordon, Allen, Ken and Leigh. A coal miner in the beginning, Fred moved on to Harmac where he retired at age 65. Leaving Nanaimo for Gabriola in the early 1980’s, Fred enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures - taking his grandkids to the beach, long walks with his wife, his garden and lots of golf.

An avid sports player, Fred won the 1938 B.C. Lacrosse championships with his team Orange Crush. Fred loved camping with his family, he enjoyed watching soccer, was a devoted golfer, a passionate gardener and a zealous world traveller. Fred was a selfless, strong, wise man, an amazing loving husband, an exceptional father/grandfather/great-grandfather and role model. He had a contagiously happy spirit, and warm helping hand and a soft gentle heart.

Fred was predeceased by his son Leigh nine years ago and leaves behind an everlasting legacy; his loving wife of 60 years, his three remaining sons; Gordon, Allen and Ken, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two special girls; Andrea and Dakota. He is sorely missed but never forgotten, as his warmth, kindness and life’s wisdom will live on in everyone that he embraced.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at the Nanaimo Yacht Club Sunday Aug. 22, 2010

between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
